The invention is characterised in that an alternating current is supplied to the conduit system and the wire or the two or more wires which run at a distance from one another, that the magnetic field generated by the alternating current through the conduit system, or by the wire or wires is detected in a locally resolved manner along the conduit system and that a magnetic field evaluation is carried out based on the detected magnetic field, said evaluation being used to detect the location of faults.
