The system to protect the working zone of a tunneling machine at the tools (1) or shield mantles (4), in drilling a tunnel through rock, has at least one shrouding hood (6) to cover at least a part of the tools or shield mantles or auxiliary structure in the direction of the working face (10), before the space is filled between the working face and the shrouding hood. The shrouding hood is of a flexible material, which is kept folded until it is deployed for use.
