Automatic Reduction of Titanium Solutions

A process for controlling the continuous reduction of solutions containing Ti and Fe salts, obtained by decomposing Ti ores, ore concentrates, and slags with acids, prior to hydrolysis to form TiO 2 , comprises measuring the redox potential of the solution and controlling the amount of the solution passed through a reducing apparatus accordingly. The reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and some Ti4+ to Ti3+ is effected, and the redox potential measures the content of Ti3+ ions. Scrap iron or electrolysis may be used. The redox measuring system may comprise a Pt electrode dipping into the final solution, combined with a reference electrode or with another Pt electrode dipping into the initial solution. The decomposition acid may be H 2 SO 4 or HCl.
