Composition useful for pretreating textiles before dyeing comprises a sulfonate (I) or a polyol, an ethoxylated alcohol (II), an alkoxylated alcohol (III), poly(meth)acrylic or polymaleic acid and water. The composition comprises: (A) either a sulfonate of formula R<2>(R<1>)2CC(R<1>)(R<2>)(C(R<1>)(R<2>))nR<1> (I) or a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol with 2-12 carbon (C) atoms; (B) an ethoxylated alcohol of formula R<3>O(CH2CH2O)rX (II); (C) an alkoxylated alcohol of formula R<3>O(Z)tX (III); (D) poly(meth)acrylic, polymaleic acid or partially hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride; and (E) water. n = 0-8; R<1> = H, 1-4C alkyl, or phenyl optionally substituted by SO3M; R<2> = R<1> or SO3M; M = Na, K or NH4, provided that at least one SO3M group is present.; r = 1-8; R<3> = 4-20C alkyl; X = H, Me, Et or Ph, at least 50% being H. t = 4-30; Z = CH2CH2O (20-80%) and CHR<4>CHR<5>O (20-80%); R<4>, R<5> = H or methyl, one being H and the other being methyl.
