The invention relates to a device for forming objects from a material strand (1) and for separating said objects. The device comprises a mould (5) for forming a relief (10) in one section (21) of the material strand, a separation device (6) for separating the reliefs (10) that have been formed by the mould (5) and a transport device for transporting the material strand through the mould (5) and the separation device (6). A device (11, 12, 13) for producing a reference characteristic (22) in the material strand (1) is located outside the mould (5) and is coupled to the latter. The separation device (6) comprises a detection device (16, 17) for detecting the position of the reference characteristic, which is assigned to a first relief, in the strand (1) and a cutting tool (14, 15) that can be positioned using the detected position of the reference characteristic (22).
