According to the invention, passengers are supplied with a first fraction of oxygen-enriched air from independent supply means, in particular high-pressure cylinders (16), during a descent phase in which the aircraft descends from a normal cruising altitude to an intermediary diversion altitude. Moreover, compressed air is taken from the aircraft's own compressed air source in order to produce (in 2) a second fraction of said oxygen-enriched air, which is delivered to the passengers at least during a stabilised flight phase of the aircraft at an altitude close to the diversion altitude, above 5,500 metres.
