To acquire a strain having a high gamma -linolenic acid productivity via gene manipulation of Mucor circinelloides, it is ai med at providing genetic information concerning lipid production by this fungus and obtaining fatty acid DELTA 6-position desatu rase genes. Namely, fatty acid DELTA 6-position desaturase genes having the base sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1 in Sequence Listing and plasmid vectors and a yeast transformant strain SD-3 containing these genes.
