A scalping machine for tube or bar stock comprises a rotary cutter head 5 with work stock feeding means axially located on each side of the cutter head, the feeding means being in the form of feed rollers 23 on one side of the cutter head and a collet-type reciprocating gripper clamping devicd 10 on the other side of the head. Non-rotating bar or tubular stock is fed axially through the head by the rollers 2, 3 and is withdrawn by the reciprocating and gripping action of the clamping device 10 the action of which is fluid operated. Guide means 6 is provided immediately in front of the cutter head to promote rigidity of the bar or tube stock during machining. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2, the feed rollers 2, 3 are omitted and reciprocating gripper-type feed devices 27 and 28 are provided on both sides of the cutter head 5, these devices being sequentially operated to alternately guide feed the bar stock through the cutter head. The clamping of the respective jaws 34, 43 is effected by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure and the reciprocation of the clamping jaws is effected by rotation of gear nuts 40, 47 on respective threaded spindles 29, 44. |
