Dyeing of fibrous materials contg. wool with anionic dyes is carried out in the presence of a wool protection agent contg. unsatd. dicarboxylic acid cpd(s). (I) of formula (IA) and/or (IB): R-O-CO-CR1=CR2-CO-B-CO-CR1'=CR2'-O-R<'> (IA); R-O-CO-CH=CH-CO-O-Z1-H (IB); B = -X-Z1-, -X-Z2-X- or -NR3-(alk)-Z1-(alk)0-1-NR3'-; X = -O- or -NR3-; Z1 = -(CH2-CH2-O)p-(CHY1-CHY2-O)q-(CHY3-CHY4-O)r-; if X = -NR3-,Z2 = the radical of a tri-, tetra- or polyamine, in which the free amino gps. are (partly) in the form of an acylamino gp. of the formula: -NR3-CO-CR1"=CR2"-CO-O-R"; or if X = -O-, Z2 = the radical of a tri-, tetra- or polyol in which the free OH gps. are (partly) in the form of an ester gp. of the formula: -O-CO-CR1"=CR2"-CO-O-R"; R, R', R" = H, 1-6 C alkyl or a cation; R1, R1', R1", R2, R2', R2" = H, 1-6 C alkyl or halogen; R3, R3' = H or 1-6 C alkyl; (alk) = opt. substd. 1-4 C alkylene; one of Y1 and Y2 = Me and the other = H; one of Y3 and Y4 = Et and the other = H; p, q, r = 0-20 such that (p+q+r) = 2-20.
