A modulator (104) is coupled between a signal source (102) and the output (103), whilst a first logarithmic amplifier (201) has its input coupled to the circuit input (101). A second logarithmic amplifier (202) has its input coupled to the circuit output (103). An output of each logarithmic amplifier is coupled to a respective input of a comparator (111), and an output of the comparator is coupled to an input of the modulator (104). The logarithmic amplifiers (201, 202) can be successive detection logarithmic amplifiers, such amplifiers having an RF output which is amplitude limited and can be designed to have a constant phase limited output.
