A phase compensation circuit (304B), for use with an FM reception system (300), includes a delay circuit (503) and a control circuit (501). The delay circuit (503) receives a composite input signal (103) that exhibits a variable phase error and provides a plurality of selectable discrete delays. The control circuit (501) is coupled to the delay circuit (503) and receives a control signal (301) whose value corresponds to the phase error associated with the composite input signal (301). The control circuit (501) selects one of the plurality of selectable discrete delays responsive to the control signal (301), which is utilized to delay the composite input signal (103) to provide a phase compensated composite output signal (303).
