An autotensioner 20 comprises a torsion coiled spring 60 interposed between a base 30 and a rocker arm 24; and a tubular bushing 26 provided between an inner surface of the base 34a and an outside surface of the rocking arm 246a. The torsion coil spring pushes and biases the rocking arm toward the bushing. When the belt tension becomes high, an extremely large damping force acts on the rocking arm. When the belt tension becomes low a smaller damping force acts on the rocking arm. A friction member may also be provided between the rocking arm and the base, the friction member being formed from a material mainly comprising of a polyphenylene sulphide resin. Two different methods of assembly of the autotensioner are also disclosed. |
