A combustible gas containing H 2 and CO is made by steam-reforming one stream of a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon, e.g. in tubes 1, which may contain a catalyst, and partially combusting another stream of the hydrocarbon, e.g. at Al, the heat for the reforming being supplied by heat exchange in counter-current with the mixed products 3 of the reforming and combustion reactions. Steam may be present in the partial combustion reaction, and both reactions are performed at the same pressure. |
