The safety system, for a cutting or drilling tool, has a spiral (6) of sprung steel wire and the like with a number of coils shrouding the sharp cutting edges of the tool (5). When the tool is in use, the coils are compressed by the workpiece surface, to expose the cutting edges at the working site. When the tool is withdrawn, the coils reassert themselves to shroud the tool.
