The cleaning head of a vacuum cleaner has a housing forming two cylindrical chambers for a rotary brush, in contact with the floor surface, and a cylindrical turbine which drives the brush through a transmission. The passage between the two chambers is narrowed to provide a venturi inlet to the turbine, through which the suction air flow from the connected vacuum unit causes the turbine to rotate. Suction is provided from the vacuum cleaner body through a duct (9), and air is drawn through the rotary brush (5) compartment (3), and a narrow throat (12) into the turbine (8) chamber (4). Vanes (7), forming a cylindrical rotor (6), are driven by the air flow to rotate, driving the brush.
