PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent noise from being generated in an analog output even in the case of reproducing a compressed voice signal when the compressed voice signal and an uncompressed voice signal are recorded on the same tape in a recording and reproducing device that does not have a decompressing means for a compressed voice signal. SOLUTION: This recording and reproducing device for recording and reproducing a compressed voice signal without the decompressing means for compressed voice is provided with discrimination data recording part 54 for recording discrimination data for discriminating between an uncompressed voice signal and a compressed voice signal on a magnetic tape 9 in a recording mode, a discrimination data reading part 7 for reading discrimination data of a reproduced voice signal in a reproduction mode, an analog mute switch processing part 8 for muting an analog output when the read discrimination data shows a compressed voice signal, and a reproduction system multiplication processing part bypass switch 13 for bypassing a reproduction system multiplication processing part 4 when the discrimination data shows the compressed voice signal.
