1288488 Laminated anodes and cathodes UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 Feb 1970 [20 Feb 1969] 8302/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division H1] A flat primary galvanic cell is made by combining a cathode laminate and an anode laminate produced in separate operations. As shown the cathode laminate is made by covering one surface of an electrically conductive thermoplastic film 10, such as a vinyl film loaded with carbon, with a cathode mix 12, e.g. finely divided MnO 2 and carbon, and then applying separator 14. The laminate is then placed on a web of electrically non-conductive heat-sealable thermoplastic film 16 having a margin 18 extending outwardly and a central aperture for making electric contact to the electrically conductive film. The anode laminate is prepared from a metal sheet 20, e.g. zinc, on to one surface of which is secured a web of electrically non-conductive thermoplastic film 24 which also has a marginal portion 26 extending outwardly and a central aperture 28 for making contact to the metal. A layer of immobilized electrolyte is provided and in the embodiment shown comprises a layer 22 of an aqueous paste of NH 4 Cl containing ZnCl 2 , which is applied to metal sheet 20 and is backed by separator 14a, e.g. of micro-porous paper. The two laminates are then juxtaposed and the marginal web portions are sealed together forming seal 30. A metallic foil 32, e.g. tin-coated steel, is applied to the outside of cathode web 16 and deformed through central aperture 34 of web 16 to make electrical contact with cathode collector film 10. |
