<p>Cpd. of formula (I):- (where X is H or Cl and R is H or octyl, at least one residue R being octyl; the amino gps. being meta or para to each other when only one R is octyl and X is H) are biocides with strong bactericidal activity, esp. against gram-negative bacteria, even in the presence of protein, soaps and hard water, and are compatible with non-ionic surfactants. They can be used as disinfectants, preservatives and algicides, and for the bactericidal finishing of textiles and human and animal hair. (I) may be prepd. by reacting 1 mol. of octyl chloride or bromide at 100 - 150 degrees C with 1-4 mol. of an appropriate phenylenediamine and removing unreacted phenylenediamine by extraction or distillation.</p> |
