PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device, that can ensure full preheating at a discharge lamp start, can ensure stepped dimming and can be reduced in device size, via a simple circuit configuration and inexpensive parts. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device comprises a self-excited inverter for applying pulsed currents to gates of a pair of switching elements Q1 and Q2 via secondary windings T1 of inductors, to switch the pair of switching elements Q1 and Q2 on and off alternately, and a series circuit of a resistor R3 and a switch SW connected between the gate of either of the pair of switching elements Q1 and Q2 and the source for varying the gate voltage.
