PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that is provided with a shading correction function adaptive to a high-speed reader and suppressing deterioration in an SPM to the utmost. SOLUTION: When a sheet-through type automatic draft feeder continuously carries an original, an exposure lamp luminous quantity of a 1st original is monitored to perform shading correction. Even when no shading correction is applied to 2nd succeeding originals, monitoring of the exposure lamp luminous quantity is performed for each reading of the original, and when a change of a preset change or more is detected in the process of the monitoring, shading correction is applied again. A density of a member carrying the original is read to monitor the exposure lamp luminous quantity for the 2nd and succeeding originals.
