PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium having excellent magnetic reproducing characteristics with high S/N ratio and low medium noise while maintaining high perpendicular coercive force and a squareness ratio as high as possible. SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording medium having a Co-Cr- Pt perpendicular magnetic layer or a Co-Cr-Pt-B perpendicular magnetic layer with a Ti-Cr base layer interposed on a nonmagnetic substrate, a base layer and a perpendicular magnetic layer having specific film thickness and composition ratios are formed. Further, a single-layer soft magnetic backing layer made of a Ni-Fe film, Co-Zr-Nb film or Fe-Ta-C film, or an alternately laminated soft magnetic backing layer composed of Fe-Ta-C films and C films is formed between the nonmagnetic medium and the base layer.
