PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent device that is improved in luminous efficacy, while maintaining color purity and is improved in durability. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent device includes, on a first electrode formed on a base, a thin-film layer which includes a hole transport layer and a luminescent layer made of at least an organic compound, a second electrode formed on the thin-film layer; and the half width of a fluorescence spectrum in a dilute solution of a luminescent material used in the luminescent layer is not more than 50 nm, and an optical path length d; ranging from a hole transport layer/luminescent layer interface of the thin-film payer to the electrode on the luminescent layer isλ/8<=d<=3λ/8 (λ: luminescence peak wavelength).
