The brake pad service life indicator for a motor vehicle has a detector circuit (111) with a conductor cut at a preset wear point and a sensor (112) for the distance covered by the vehicle. A computer (113) determines the wear ratio which represents the wear value divided by the distance covered at the point of disconnection of the conductor. The computer calculated the remaining service life of the brake pad lining. An indicator displays the remaining brake life to a user.
