The nuclear reactor concrete pressure vessel 1 has an end opening 4 closed by the slab 8 and the wedge elements 12 which bear on the conical faces 6 and 14 respectively. The cables 16 urge the wedges 12 against face 14 and lateral restraint of the wedges is effected by the circumferential cables 20. The leak-tight membrane 27 and heat insulating covering 29 of the slab 8 are joined to the corresponding linings 26, 28 of the vessel walls. In an alternative form, the surface between the segments and the end opening is ribbed so as to prevent radiation streaming.
