Na (3.45 pts.), alpha-bromo-alpha-methylpropionate (29 pts.) added, and refluxed 4 hrs., cooled, evapd., dissolved in H2O (25 pts.) and EtOH (150 pts.) contng. KOH (25 pts.), refluxed 2 hrs., cooled, filtered, the residue suspended in H2O, acidified with 20% HCl, filtered, and recryst. from MeOH-H2O-HCl, giving (I), m.p. 134-5 deg.
