A cast seat back frame is disclosed. The seat back frame incorporates part of the recliner mechanism, as a casting, directly in the seat back frame which is preferably cast of magnesium. The recliner mechanism includes a pivoting pawl and a cast sector whose periphery is partially covered with cast gear teeth to engage the gear teeth of the pawl for adjustment of the seat back frame. The seat back frame pivots about an axis that interfaces with the seat cushion and the seat back frame. The portion of the recliner mechanism that is integrally cast in the seat back frame may take on a variety of alternative embodiments. Those alternatives comprise an integrally cast semi-circular rack gear that interfaces with a pinion gear, an integrally cast socket joint that interfaces with a ball to form a ball and socket joint, and a hub having apertures through which a plurality of pawls pass to engage a ring sector having internal gear teeth to lock the seat back frame after adjustment of a handle shaft.
