The invention relates to a roof assembly for a vehicle, particularly passenger cars, comprising rigid cover elements (23, 24) which, when viewed in the direction of travel (Fr), are arranged one behind the other in a roof opening (19) of the vehicle, and which close the entire roof opening (19) when in an initial position (R1, R2). The front cover element (23) can be displaced into an overlapping position (U1) with the rear cover element (24) whereby at least partially unblocking a front partial opening (20), and the rear cover element (24) can be displaced into an overlapping position (U2) with the front cover element (23) whereby at least partially unblocking a rear partial opening (21). In order not to diminish the headroom of the occupants in the vehicle passenger compartment (30), the invention provides that the rear cover element (24) can be lowered out of its initial position (R2) into a plane (E) parallel to its initial position (R2) and thus into a partially opened position (Te), and that the front cover element (23) can be displaced over the rear cover element (24) and into the overlapping position (U1).
