A method for testing software and/or a portable data carrier by testing the execution of at least one command by the software and/or the portable data carrier. A command to be tested is transferred to the software and execution of the command with pre-selected conditions, is ascertained. The fulfillment of the preconditions is tested and as the case may be the non-fulfilled conditions are completed by the test system. The command to be tested is carried out by the software and the obtained test results are established by the procedure and the test results are evaluated on the basis of a given target result. An Independent claim is given for a test system for carrying out the software testing method.
