A printhead (100) includes a common ink chamber (104) or reservoir bounded on one side by a membrane (106) having nozzle apertures (120,122,124). The membrane (106) forms a print face of the printhead (100). Piezoelectric elements (108,110,112) are located on the membrane (106) near the nozzles (120,122,124). The piezoelectric flex segments of the membrane (106) surrounding the nozzles (120,122,124) to eject ink droplets from the nozzle apertures (120,122,124). Ribs (330,332) are also provided on the membrane (106) and define boundaries of the membrane segments corresponding to the nozzles (120,122,124). The ribs (330,332) can isolate each nozzle from the other nozzles, in two ways. First, the ribs (330,332) act as stiffeners so that when the piezoelectric elements (108,110,112) attached to one membrane segment flex that membrane segment, the other membrane segments are not significantly flexed. Second, when the ribs (330,332) are provided on an interior surface of the membrane (106), they deflect the pressure pulse in the ink fluid from a flexing membrane segment, upwards, away from adjacent membrane segments/nozzles.
|
