The protective device has two formed profiled parts (42,44), which are connected sliding to the inner side surfaces of a cover (12) enclosing the knife or blade (24). The profiled parts are moved along the surface by drive elements. These are connected articulated to each other and/or to a rod (26), which is fastened to the stationary machine frame (16). The elements are formed by arms (34,36), connected at the top to the rod, and two opposite levers (38,40), hinged to the lower arm ends.
