The gas generator has a cold gas chamber (2) and at least two combustion chambers (3,4) containing propellant gases with trigger devices (5,6) for producing hot gases. Each combustion chamber is isolated from the cold gas chamber by a separation element (11,12) that makes a connection to allow mixing of cold and hot gases after ignition of the propellant gases. Ignition takes place first in the combustion chamber whose gas quantity gives a mixed quantity with the cold gas matching the crash situation. The propellant gas for the other combustion chamber then ignites if appropriate.
