Stars and other celestial sources are sometimes transited by passing objects (e.g., asteroids, comets, and planets) that cast brief and fleeting diffraction shadows across the earth. By sampling light from such events at plural points on the earth's surface, and modeling the intervening diffractive environment, an image of the source can be derived.
