A replaceable fluid filter cartridge for a filter assembly which includes a housing and a cooperating centerpost is designed so as to include a generally cylindrical filter element having a sidewall which defines a hollow interior and an endplate bonded to one end of the filter element. The cooperating housing for the replaceable cartridge includes a pair of opposite polarity electrical contacts that are provided at a precise location within the base portion of the housing. A data component which may be a sensor, data chip, resistor, or electrical connection strip is assembled to an exposed surface of the endplate and is arranged with electrical contacts which are constructed and arranged so as to be able to make electrical contact with the housing contacts so long as the replaceable cartridge is properly installed.
