The invention relates to a 6-gear transmission built as a multiple group assembly, consisting of a main group and a downstream split group, wherein the connection between the main group and the split group is ensured by a single continuous shaft, wherein a split countershaft that is separate from the countershaft of the main group is provided for the gearwheels of the split group. The split countershaft is configured as a hollow shaft that is arranged on the countershaft of the main group. The invention also relates to a method for shifting individual gears. In a first step, the split group is opened, said group being controlled by an electronic control device integrated into the transmission.
