Granulate, preferably for use as immobilization carrier in biotechnology, is a composite grain with a closed-pore core and open-pore shell of abrasion-resistant material for colonization with microorganisms or living cells. Independent claims are also included for the production of a granulate, in which the porosity of the shell of a composite grain of glass ceramic sintered material, ceramic or modified open-pore expanded glass is produced by substances that can be removed by burning or thermal expulsion, or leaching.
