PURPOSE: A method of detecting a scene change is provided to correctly and stably recognize all kinds of scene changes by applying a two-stage detection procedure. CONSTITUTION: A mode and stack are initialized(201), and the current frame is decoded to store the image in an image stack(202). A characteristic vector is extracted from the image of the current frame to store the characteristic vector in a vector stack(203). The difference between characteristic vectors of two frame recently stored in the vector stack is stored in a difference queue(203). It is judged if the difference satisfies a mode conversion condition(205), then it is confirmed if the image stack and the vector stack are full(208). It is confirmed if the frame is the last frame(210). In case of stationary mode, the entire frames stored are set to one segment. In case of transition mode, the stored frames are divided into multiple segments. It is confirmed if there is a segment to be processed according to each mode. When there is the segment to be processed, It is judged if it is required that each segment be divided into independent scenes.
