PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect failures of a hydraulic pressure detecting means of an internal combustion engine for ship comprising two hydraulic pressure switches, i.e., a first hydraulic pressure switch (on a lower pressure side) for generating an output when the hydraulic pressure of lubricating oil is not higher than a first predetermined value and a second hydraulic pressure switch (on a higher pressure side) for generating an output when the hydraulic pressure of the lubricating oil is higher than the first predetermined value and not higher than a second predetermined value. SOLUTION: Based on the outputs of two hydraulic pressure switches, i.e., the first and second hydraulic pressure switches, the failures thereof are detected (S208, S212, S216, S232 and S236). Failures of the second hydraulic pressure switch are detected when a predetermined time (failure detection execution timer tmDTCT) after the internal combustion engine is started, and when an engine speed NE is not lower than a predetermined engine speed NEDTCT (S220 and S222), and the determination thereof is finalized if failure is determined at least twice (S228).
