PHASE CONTRAST FILM AND CIRCULARLY POLARIZING PLATE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin layer phase contrast film which shows little changes in the phase contrast depending on the wavelength and a superior constancy of the phase contrast. SOLUTION: The film contains two kinds of aligning components having different wavelength dispersion and directions of birefringence substantially perpendicular to each other. At least one component is a lyotropic liquid crystal compound or its fixed compound. The phase contrast film shows the birefringence for light at 450 nm wavelength higher than the birefringence for light at 550 nm wavelength.
