A container for transporting, e.g., irradiated fuel elements, comprises a steel vessel 1 and a lid 3 spigoted to the vessel, joint rings 6 ensuring leak tightness. Within the container are removable cast iron shielding members 10, 11, 12, the member 12 having apertures 13 for locating the fuel elements. The members 10, 11, 12 may be replaced by other members to define a different shaped space or spaces within the container for receiving fuel elements of different shape. Longer fuel elements may be accommodated by inserting additional sections between the vessel 1 and lid 3 and between the shielding members 10, 12 (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification (not shown), the apertures 13 are replaced by a central cavity for receiving a basket containing the fuel elements. |
