A resistively heated wire of e.g. W, Ta, Al, Mo, Al-coated W, W-coated Si, and glass coated Cu is coated with e.g. boron by passing the wire through a chamber 2 and feeding e.g. boron trichloride and hydrogen mixture from each end of the chamber to give concurrent and countercurrent flows. The boron trichloride concentrations are adjusted to provide peak temperatures at both ends of the chamber. The chamber has end plugs 14, 16 with mercury seals and ruby orifices for the passage of the wire. |
