PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit catalyst particles from powdering during catalyst substitution in a fluid catalytic cracking method for a hydrocarbon in the case when there is a large difference in abrasion resistance between a catalyst being used in a fluid catalytic cracking apparatus and a new catalyst, thus providing a fluid catalytic cracking method for a hydrocarbon enabling stable operation. SOLUTION: In this method for subjecting a hydrocarbon to catalytic cracking, a catalyst (A) being used in a fluid catalytic cracking apparatus of a hydrocarbon is substituted with a catalyst (B). When the difference in average abrasion rate between catalyst (A) and catalyst (B) is 0.14 wt.%/h or higher, the fluid catalytic cracking method contains (1) the step of substituting catalyst (A) in the catalytic cracking apparatus with a catalyst (N1 ) having an average abrasion rate differing from that of catalyst (A) by 0.04-0.10 wt.%/h and (2) the step of adding catalyst (B) when, after the repetition of step (1) if necessary, the difference in average abrasion rate between catalyst (Nn ) in the fluid catalytic cracking apparatus and catalyst (B) reaches 0.10 wt.%/h or lower, in order to substitute catalyst (Nn ) with catalyst (B).
