A point of sale counter (220) has plural food products each uniquely associated with a bar-code symbol to identify the product when optically scanned. The counter also includes a cash register (112) with an antenna (208) and a combination scale/printer (160), while an operator uses a scanner (10). When weighing a product, the scanner is aimed at the product bar-code so that the scale/printer prints the correct price label. An independent claim is included for a method of assisting customers in a retail establishment.
