PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating a veneer (and an apparatus for treating the veneer) capable of reducing a facility cost of a necessary apparatus for treating when the veneer fed from a veneer lathe is continuously cut and treated and which may not lower the yield of the veneer. SOLUTION: The apparatus for treating the veneer comprises a cutter H for vertically sorting the veneer 1 to a rear site of the veneer lathe (not shown in Fig.) by continuously cutting the veneer 1, and passages (a) and (b) of the effective veneer having upper and lower stages to the rear site of the cutter H and an openable/closable chip discharge passage (c) so as to dispose the passage (b) of the effective veneer of the lower stage at the rear site of the chip discharge passage (c). The method for treating the veneer comprises the steps of always opening the chip discharge passage (c) until the veneer to be cut in a specified length arrives when the veneer 1 fed from the veneer lathe is sequentially cut by the cutter H, effecting chip removing treatment to remove the unnecessary part of the veneer 1 as the chip S, closing the passage (c) irrespective of the presence of the unnecessary part on the following veneer after the veneer to be cut in the specified length arrives, and cutting the veneer only at each specified length.
