PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing an amorphous carbon nanotube having a comparatively small outside diameter with a narrow distribution. SOLUTION: (1) In the presence of copper metal, under reduced pressure or in the inert gas atmosphere, iron chloride and compound containing fluorine and carbon are heated, nano-scale iron fluoride whiskers coated whose outside diameter is 100 nm or less with deposited thermal cracked amorphous carbon on the surface of are formed on the copper metal. (2) The nano-scale iron fluoride whiskers are removed from the nano-scale whisker coated by amorphous carbon obtained by the above process (1), and the amorphous nano-scale carbon tube whose outside diameter is 100 nm or less is left on the copper metal.
