PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the display quality in the front face direction of a liquid crystal display device in a NW mode having a horizontal alignment type liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is equipped with a liquid crystal cell having a liquid crystal layer 15 containing a liquid crystal material with positive dielectric anisotropy held between a pair of substrates 12, 14, with a pair of polarizing plates 22, 24 disposed to hold the liquid crystal cell 10, and with a phase difference compensation element 32 (34) disposed in at least one of the gaps between the liquid crystal cell and the pair of the polarizing plates. The display device displays in a normally white mode. The phase difference compensation element shows retardation in the plane parallel to the principal plane of the liquid crystal cell, which compensates the front face retardation of the liquid crystal layer in the black display state. |
