PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect a focus in a short time even in the case of performing low contrast search control. SOLUTION: This camera is equipped with an AF driving unit 26 and a lens driving mechanism 86 for driving a photographic lens 14 in its extending direction and its withdrawing direction, and a main body control part 34 making the driving speed of the lens 14 set when the focus can not be detected lower when the lens 14 is driven from the extending direction side to the withdrawing direction side than when it is driven from the withdrawing direction side to the extending direction side.
