PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reading radiographic image information which permits high-speed reading. SOLUTION: While a storage phosphor sheet in which radiographic image information is stored is moved in a sheet plane direction, the surface of the phosphor sheet is irradiated with pulsed exciting light whose duty is 0.01 to 0.5 or less by carrying out scanning in a direction almost vertical to the moving direction of the sheet. The photoelectric detection of the stimulating light emitted from the phosphor sheet is continuously carried out to obtain an electric signal, the electric signal is sampled in timing when the electric signal is synchronized with the irradiation pulse of the exciting light, and then an image signal having the radiographic image information is obtained from the sampled electric signal.
