A bread sandwich comprises two slices of compressed bread 2,4 separated by a viscous cheese paste 10 which envelopes a filling 8, eg meat or tuna. The outer faces of the slices are coated with an edible fat 12, eg butter, and the sandwich is then deep frozen. Preferably the cheese paste is made of melted cheese enhanced with a thickener such as milk and cornflour. The frozen sandwich may be prepared for eating by placing it in a toaster, or in a heated oven. During preparation of the sandwich slices of thin bread are compressed by passing through a pair of cooperating rollers 24, 26, to reduce their thickness and close up voids. The slices are then passed through a rotary brush 28 submerged in a tank of melted butter 30 to apply a coating of butter to the underside of each slice. The slices are then passed underneath a cheese paste vat 32 to coat the other sides with paste. The filling is added from another vat 36, and an inverter 40 inverts each alternate slice to deposit on the following slice to form the sandwich. |
