PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a glycolic acid copolymer with high molecular weight and high quality in a good efficiency obtained by a polycondensation from an aqueous raw material solution containing a relatively high concentration of water. SOLUTION: This method for producing the glycolic acid copolymer is characterized by using a hydrolysate obtained by hydrolyzing a specific metal alkoxide in the presence of glycolic acid, as a polycondensation catalyst and performing the polycondensation reaction of a hydroxyl carboxylic acid such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, etc.
