A recovery disc is created in step 100 and is inserted in step 104 to restart a computer during encountering an error. The disc includes files, drivers and configuration settings necessary to fully boot the operating system in step 106. The user is prompted to proceed at step 108 and to run simple easy-to-use restore and recovery applications within the graphical user interface. If it is determined in step 110 that the error has been corrected, the user is prompted at step 112 to restart the computer in normal manner. If the problem persists, the user can contact service personnel at step 120 or restore from a backup at step 122. The system may also include booting from a floppy disk which transfers control to the removable high capacity disk. There is also means described to present partitioned media to an operating system as non-partitioned media and to reassign drive letters to allow the removable high capacity media to function as a bootable source. |
